Finally got the opportunity to read the original manga, and it’s crazy to think that it takes place in 2029-2030, which is just around the corner.
Ghost in the Shell is an absolute cyberpunk classic that was ahead of its time both in terms of themes and visuals. I’m still obsessed with the incredibly detailed backgrounds of the floating city and could inspect them for hours. The title song, which sounds both futuristic and traditional, is just the cherry on top.
I will say that the overall feeling of the anime was more pessimistic than that of the manga, but maybe that was more fitting for the end of the century tech anxiety.
