wow this was a hard watch. the message its pushing has merit, but I think the movie ultimately did it a disservice. if an experience in life is going to be really uncomfortable i want to feel like I’m growing from that challenge, and becoming a better person, but that didn’t happen here. it didn’t really talk about its message in an interesting way or add much to the conversation.

it just said its society is bad because of how it superficially values physical attraction (especially with women), and how that impacts people negatively. that’s true sure, but we all instinctually know that and it didn’t offer a new perspective or way to to think about it. it didn’t change my mind on anything, or give me a better way to think/behave. It blames hollywood, but like the hollywood guy is comically evil in a way that makes you roll your eyes. he’s a pig we get it, but like show us how the world enables that character, make him well written enough to be funny/entertaining, or give us something more than a trope. for contrast, the insurance guy (Bob’s boss) from the first incredibles movie is so good because it’s a relatable situation, and the dialogue is funny. the substance also completely glosses over who I think probably has more blood on their hands when it comes to societal issues around appearance — cosmetics, beauty, fitness industry. that is the colossal set of industries trying their hardest and spending hundreds of billions to make everyday people feel like they way they look is not good enough.

I don’t think at all that movies need to have a message to be good, but this movie wasn’t really enjoyable or entertaining either. some aspects of the plot felt rushed/you have to set aside your disbelief, and lacking depth. maybe give us background on the substance and who made it? maybe give us background on the main character more? maybe have a hero who is trying to fix the issue? a lot of it felt like gore for the sake of gore. some of the cinematography was interesting but nothing that felt cool enough to be redeemable in any way. acting was good, but i think i was so turned off by other parts of the film that it was hard to appreciate.

As always I appreciate ambition, and I’m pro people trying interesting ideas even if it fails. I’d rather money be spent on something like this than a marvel reboot. that said, I wouldn’t recommend watching this to anybody.

to be clear, based on other people’s reviews and opinions it taught me who i could trust in the room. not many but shoutout ireland iykyk 🇮🇪

toughhhhh watch. i didn’t find the cinematography that interesting frankly and that’s most of what this had going for it. the close up shots and quick camera cuts have been done many times before.

the message itself was pretty surface level, and there is definitely more that could have been said about it, but it wasn’t in this movie. women beauty standards suck, yep we know, but how about we break that down a bit further instead of telling me that over and over again with slow motion footage of workout videos.

the one good scene was the date scene which i will say was well done and you really do feel for Elizabeth, still there really wasn’t enough done where she really felt like a protagonist. i wasn’t really rooting for any characters at all. i disliked pretty much everybody except for maybe the doctor (not hot male nurse) who had a 10 second cameo.

the makeup/graphic were cool, but that’s just not enough. i also can’t really say if I loved Demi Moore’s acting. it was good, but to win golden globe is kinda crazy.
