Crows Are White
Monks? Useless
Ryushin? Modern Day Buddha

A documentary for a very small subgroup of third culture kids that were raised Muslim but then chucked across the sea away from family onto a new land where they built their own boats to survive. This hit close to home. The estrangement, the internal fracture of who you were supposed to be versus who you ended up becoming will always hurt and you internalize that as part your identity. Your life is not for others to understand, just for you to live.

It took me a long time to figure out that home is not where you’re from but where you’re wanted.

I am at peace with my contradictions. I’ll see you in hell I guess.

Crows Are White
he said "i used to pray like this too, five times a day" and i was like oh brother me too, man i wonder what his religion is.. well, this play is about us help. OH... the three sip rule, oh this IS about us...
ryushin keeps cracking me up too, every time he gets asked if he's supposed to do what he's doing he's like "emmm i dunno but i do it..? i'd prolly get banned for this, haha."

oh my God, the moment with his parents, i also cried. we all crode. whole house crode!! his parents are insufferable. they're doing fuck all too.

i gave the movie 3 stars but it's mostly due to how visually pleasing it was and how endearing ryushin was. otherwise i think the concept of this movie was interesting but badly handled. it's like having a cough and going to see a chiropractor, like i guess both know stuff about health but you can't ask the chiropractor to solve your cough ?? i don't know. i feel like he didn't prepare his questions accordingly, why would you ask questions about islam to a buddhist monk.. at least opt for more general religious questions. and also the trauma dumping on ryushin oh my God, this man is not your therapist...

Crows Are White
Ryushin seemed like a genuinely incredible person. I would die for him.

I don’t think this reaches the level of profound it’s aiming for, but it’s an incredibly self-aware film that I got a lot from and resonated with me more than I would expect it to.

Incredibly watchable and just the right amount of insightful
