Wonderfully shot, everything in frame feels so under control, very regimented and so it’s messages and subtext is so purposeful it’s sort of impossible to miss and lack impact
Funny moments, lighthearted, warming and sweet
A wonderful tale of kindness and compassion in the face of ruthless, hypocritical systems that define our lives
A far less bleak take on this kind of societal structure than 99% of other jidai-gekis
Shining a light on kinder authority and real chemistry between people 
Why can’t master and servant enjoy a drink together ?
Why can’t people laugh and have fun ?
Why can’t we all spend our money to help each other ?
Are there any worthless things ?
It’s refreshing and lovely 
People can just get along

Much more reserved and introspective than I had expected. Taps into a humanism akin to Ozu (who gets a special credit). Places the story in a samurai setting which means some themes akin to Mizoguchi's movies are brought up too. Uchida is such an interesting find. He feels like a well kept secret by the Japanese. Thankfully these Arrow blu rays exist.
