The simple story has the pair coming to the rescue of peace-loving Mormons when land-hungry Major Harriman sends his bullies to harass them into giving up their fertile valley. Trinity and Bambino manage to save the Mormons and send the bad guys packing with slapstick humor instead of excessive violence, saving the day.
They Call Me Trinity may have been the first domino in the eventual death of my favorite sub-genre but there’s still a lot to appreciate in this dumb little western comedy and I managed a pretty good time out of it. For one it has one of the most iconic theme songs in western history, if you’ve seen Django Unchained you’ve heard this movie’s theme and even though I think they used it just a little too much the impact was still potent and it remains one of the best to come from one of these. Another positive here is a rare achievement for these spaghetti westerns, I’ve really only seen it done to this level in Sergio Leone’s movies but the dubbing here was almost unnoticeable, Terence Hill and Bud Spencer did such a good job voicing over their own performances and the rest of the cast wasn’t too far off. It’s also got some really lovely photography, some nice shot composition is the framework for some beautiful shots of from the Mormon camp landscapes and lovely town set, they certainly didn’t have to go as hard as they did there but I’m happy it did as it really elevated my experience. Where it falters just a bit for me and misses out on a higher rating is with the comedy, I got some decent chuckles but the comedic focus took away from an admittedly typical ‘struggle for power in the town’ plot but it’s still a plot I wanted more from, especially in its conclusion. Overall I had a surprisingly good time and could definitely see myself throwing on the sequel sometime this year, I didn’t think I’d ever see a “turn your brain off” western and even though the idea isn’t all that appealing I’m very happy to say it worked.
