A Cottage on Dartmoor marks my final planned viewing of 1929 for my *Cinema History Project*, thus finishing up the 1920's. And what a personal milestone it is.

It has taken me almost two years to reach this point with a 169 films watched between 1900 and 1929; 124 of them released in the 1920's. I must admit that it's taking me a little longer than I first anticipated, but my commitment to the project does vary a lot. I also only expected to watch perhaps a couple of films from each year, but as I reached the 1920's I averaged at 10-20 films a year, sometimes more.

Nonetheless, It's good feeling to have come this far, and a perfect film to end the 1920's on. Cool, silent and heavily stylized. Here comes the 1930's.

I'm not sure how I've never heard of this before, but it's a masterpiece of silent cinema as far as I'm concerned.

This is a deeply moving and disturbing look at jealousy which takes us into the mind of an obsessive and jealous man. His feelings can be deeply felt by the audience; this is assisted by simply stunning cinematography. It really feels like the best of what silent cinema has to offer- the visual storytelling and use of montages and suggestion to push the story along is very, very strong.

If you don't see anything else from this movie, please watch the scene where the characters are at a sound movie. It's probably my favorite scene- the elements I described above are present, but it's also kind of bittersweet to think of this movie as one of the last of its kind.
