Freund and Hoffman are just going absolutely bananas with cinematography here, holy shit. The story is sort of a cross with The Blue Angel and some of Tod Browning's sideshow pictures, particularly The Unknown, and perhaps throw in a bit of Nightmare Alley. Just really damn good essential Weimar cinema, and desperately makes me wish that The 4 Devils still existed...
