“NOOOO IM A STAR! PLEASE IM A STAR. PLEASE, SOMEBODY HELP ME! PLEASE HELP ME! HELP!”
for my 700th review i knew i had to log something special, probably my old favourite movie, before i really got into film. on a rewatch, this was just an amazing as what i remembered. X is a super striking, one of a kind slasher set with the protagonists shooting a pornographic movie, and they’re murdered by old pearl and howard, who have become highly envious of the youth of these new visitors, as they’re able to perform sex, while howard can’t (due to like heart problems or something). that movie was just great, but the prequel ‘pearl’ is even better, and is more of a character study rather than an ordinary slasher, and gives reasoning on why pearl is like this. from her murderous tendencies starting off with her stabbing a goose, or crushing eggs with her hands: and progresses into her murder of real people, especially the ones closest to her. also showing her repressed sexuality and psychological descent of her being isolated on a farmhouse with her nasty mother, and extremely disabled father: unable to become the dancer she always wanted to be. mia goth truly carries this film, with her outrageous, over-the-top performance of the titular character ‘pearl’, really representing her pure anguish and psychopathy, making the character more threatening. she constantly sneaks up to the camera, her like ten minute rant was dripping with emotional intensity and the smiling ending credits was truly memorable and unsettling to say the least. the colour truly pops, and i think the problem with modern horror is its usually really monotonous, and just boring. this movie is extremely inspired by the golden age of hollywood, as it truly looks like a modern interpretation of visuals from movies such as the wizard of oz, with pearls blood red dress and lipstick. that is also contrast with the gruesome violence that pearl creates. the reason this movie is such a good horror movie, is that it doesn’t rely on stupid jumpscares. it had clear themes of attachment and isolation, that is the main reason for pearls manic mental state. it shows the mental decline of a women with broken aspirations of the crumbling ‘american dream’, as she has to accept her fate as a farm girl that no one will ever hear from again. it’s truly a melancholic horror period piece that perfectly humanises its villain. probably one of the most significant horrors of the decade, and i’d choose this over any joker movie any day honestly.
