This definitely itched a deep feeling of nostalgia in the back of my brain. Minecraft has always been, and very much still is, one of my favorite games of all time. Seeing Jack Black impersonate Minecraft Steve is almost surreal and I am not sure that far Jacob as a kid would believe that this movie is real.
Either way, the movie made me think a lot about all of the amazing memories I have of playing as a kid (and adult for that matter). I originally got the game in 5th grade and I distinctly remember my first world. I had a very simplistic 4 story house with ladders all over to climb to each multi functional level. There were farms, storage, a mine, just about everything in that little house. What I remember the most was being so afraid of the mobs at night looming in the distance as the dark came every 20 minutes of real life time.
Over the years I played in hundreds of different worlds, played hundreds of hours with friends, built houses, farms, went splunking, etc. The game was always evolving and was always a familiar comfort that you were sure to have so much fun with every time you logged on.
To this day, I watch YouTube videos about Minecraft. I may not have the time to play much at all, but this outlet has always been such a fun way to keep living through others experience of the joy this game has brought me.
I don’t really have much to say for the movie other than that it was fun and I am so grateful for those memories to have popped up in my head again. I do wish the story that was told was more in line with Minecraft’s general chronology or loading in, gathering tools and food, mining, getting armor and tools, going to the nether, enchanting, and going to the end to defeat the dragon. This would’ve made the movie so much better for me. There were just a few too many liberties taken with the story that was told for me to properly enjoy it. Nonetheless, young fat Jacob would’ve loved this.
