As an introduction to the British New Wave, this was pretty good!
It’s entertaining, well made and can get pretty thrilling at times. Most reviews compare this to Uncut Gems and the comparisons are definitely warranted. It’s the similar story of a sleazebag who keeps falling deeper into a hole of desperation and crime.
My main gripes are how Sammy Lee sucks and the middle section is extremely repetitive. Sammy has his moments but he’s hardly ever somebody I want to root for. He’s not even that interesting either, he’s just shitty. The middle 30 minutes are also very boring. It’s just him asking people over and over for money, the story hardly progresses. They just cut to a peep show every 10 minutes to make sure the viewer doesn’t fall asleep.
Still, it’s incredibly fun and it really picks up in the last act. It’s also fairly brave and experimental, which was unexpected. If you liked Uncut Gems and wished it was more like Breathless, this one is definitely for you.
