One Fine Spring Day is such a grounded movie. Its approach is very similar to Kore-eda which is a director I love. The film is way more focused on the vibes and the characters instead of a bombastic story. The film goes from such a nice and comfy watch to a film where you just feel heartbroken and melancholic. Both of the characters are really good. They are complex and the choices they make are extremely human and easy to relate to. Sometimes I wish we got a bit more into Eun-su and why she makes some of her choices but it’s kind of the point. Sometimes, there isn’t a reason why people drift away. At least, not a definitive thing that someone did wrong that made the relationship falter. That’s the big theme of the film and it’s done expertly. It does an amazing job at showing and building the relationship all while showing its disintegration in the second half. The ending is so tough to watch and yet it’s so real. The cinematography and sound design is also great and really gets you engaged with the film. I keep trying to find some reason to say why this film isn’t a masterpiece but I can’t. I mean the only reason it isn’t is if this film doesn’t connect with you. But I can assure you, One Fine Spring Day absolutely connected with me. I don’t really have the words to describe this movie as I’m still processing a lot of this film while writing this but here’s what I’ll say. This will be a film that I will think about for a long, long time.
