extremely stylish and messy at the same time. christopher walken is obviously the highlight, he’s got this weird, hypnotic presence that makes frank white feel unpredictable and kind of terrifying, but also strangely sympathetic. the movie’s got this neon-drenched, gritty vibe that makes new york look both glamorous and rotten, which really works for the whole crime lord trying to go legit angle.
but the thing is, while it looks great and has some really solid moments, it kind of struggles with pacing. some scenes feel electric, especially the ones where walken is just effortlessly cool, but others drag or feel a little directionless. the supporting cast is insanely, but not all of them get enough to do, and some of the action just feels like chaos for the sake of chaos.
it’s a fun, violent crime flick with a unique energy, but it doesn’t quite hit the heights of the best gangster films. but worth watching for walken alone.
