i’m not gonna lie, i haven’t seen the original 1958 movie, but considering this is a standalone remake and it just seemed a lot more interesting with its cover and also proclaimed as one of the best body horrors ever, i just wanted to go straight to this one: and it was amazing. i think this movies biggest strength was some of the best most gruesome practical effects i’ve ever seen, the scenes where civilians are dissolved and melted by the blob are some of the movies best areas by far, and those scenes honestly still hold up today. it is also one of the best body horror i’ve definitely seen, and while it isn’t the thing and doesn’t really hold a candle in comparison, this was still an immaculate movie in its own right. this film was never dull, even in the first 20 minutes: this is a swift, relentless action filled movie with a high body count and there’s never really a filler scene throughout its 95 minute runtime. i think the thing that differentiates this with other body horrors of the era, is this one seems to have a lot more of a brutal tone to it, not even the main characters are safe here and the complete unpredictability of the blob not only allows this movie to have an interesting spectacle, but the suspense is heightened as no one’s off limits. the characters are all likeable which is rare to find in these movies, especially the main heroine as she really is resourceful in this state of apocalypse. i also saw how unlike other horror B movies, the acting here actually felt decent, which i guess was also nice. later within the movie, the blob isn’t even the real main villain: the government is, as they conspire against civilisation and don’t care about the lives of others aswell, and this kinda reflects the mean spirited political state of the usa within the 80s. this is quote over the top, even cheesy but it’s just a super fun horror movie that deserves classic status.
