I liked Sydney, but at the same time I felt the documentary was too safe considering his complex personality. The best parts are when you see Sydney himself (and family and friends) detailing particular moments of his life, but those do not happen very often as they are “interrupted” by a cut to another time of his life. You’re constantly jumping from era to era, from film to film, leaving some important stuff unexplored.
Sydney does a reasonably good jog of exposing its subject’s importance not only in Hollywood, but also in American society. Some of the interviewees do add another dimension to this, as they are a testament as to Sydney’s legacy, but others feel like they’re there just for the sake of being there.
