David Locke is a world-weary American journalist who has been sent to cover a conflict in northern Africa, but he makes little progress with the story. When he discovers the body of a stranger who looks similar to him, Locke assumes the dead man's identity. However, he soon finds out that the man was an arms dealer, leading Locke into dangerous situations. Aided by a beautiful woman, Locke attempts to avoid both the police and criminals out to get him.

Antonioni is the only director I can remember who I needed to grow up to. on my first impression, I was sure that he was definitely not for me. and with each film, I'm more and more convinced that we have a connection. our relationship is progressively developing, and I'm starting to understand his characters and the special atmosphere of his films. but I think I understand his non Italian films better…
I love Maria Schneider so much, her haircut was perfect in this. I watched it just because I have a huge crush on her. and it captivated me much more than I expected. to be honest, I didn't even understand what this film wanted to tell me. but I had a great feeling of freedom from this thing, and I like the rebellious spirit of it. I can't wait to rewatch it. have you ever felt like a film has the potential to become one of your all time favorites, but you just need to see it again? that what I'm experiencing right now. and I really like to change my mind about things, because I'm principled and it doesn't happen that often :) ‘red desert’ could be next
