In NEW YORK CITY, we reunite with the Spengler family, who team up with the original Ghostbusters (who saved NEW YORK CITY twice) to stop an evil spirit from wreaking havoc in NEW YORK CITY. They travel throughout NEW YORK CITY, meeting other residents of NEW YORK CITY, like Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani. Trying to stop them is the New York City mayor, Walter Peck. Because of Phoebe's young age, she isn't allowed to stop ghosts in NEW YORK CITY. She meets a ghost who was burned to death in a NEW YORK CITY apartment. Phoebe sparks a friendship with the ghost, but the ghost tricks her into unleashing an evil demon upon NEW YORK CITY. All their friends from NEW YORK CITY come together to save NEW YORK CITY, but they almost fail. Nevertheless, they finally save NEW YORK CITY from the demon. After ridding themselves of the dickless mayor of NEW YORK CITY, they go out to save NEW YORK CITY again.
I found myself enjoying 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife.' Some of the humor didn't work for me, and it is a flawed movie, but it won me over in the end. I liked Phoebe and most of the new characters; they managed to let the new characters come into their own, and the dryness of the humor and delivery made it appealing, and supported the family drama. While I don't hate Ghostbusters (2016) at all, I do find this movie veers into tonal inconsistency.
The dryness is absent, and is replaced by more awkward and cringeworthy humor. I love awkward and cringe humor, but they don't do it well, considering how the movie tries to continue the family drama without much success. Overall, this movie is a mess. Several plot threads could be removed. The Walter Peck stuff, while I enjoy that character, didn't work within the story. Sure, he condemns Ghostbusters HQ and takes away their equipment. What do we do? Oh, we actually have more equipment, and we can just break through this tiny lock. Much of it felt either inconsequential or lacking depth.
I like the idea of Phoebe's relationship with Melody, but they never focus on the big ideas enough. Many of the characters are just there, like Finn Wolfhard, whom I forgot was even there. There was so much going on that I wish there were a central focus. I still like most of the new characters, the setup of the central antagonist was cool, and I love what they did to the old characters. I love Dan Aykroyd, so seeing him more was great. I love how Winston had more to do, and Bill Murray's level of not-giving-a-shit flamboyancy should be studied; holy sunglasses. It's not the worst thing ever, but I do think it's the worst Ghostbusters movie...
