this half unfortunately struggles from a banger-loaded front half. should’ve saved some for leftovers. musically runs out of steam, which kind of contributes to the anti-immersion i felt. though the concept and themes + erivo carried (and fearrow and grande). there should’ve been a HUGE no one mourns the wicked reprise, that song made me cry in the first half without any context and after the 5 hours of screen time it would’ve been catharsis.
despite the lackluster emotional charge, the themes of the show are still powerful and more poignant to me in the movie than the musical. the subjectivity of good and the ability of those in power to define history, the immorality of bystanding oppression, the impact of others’ lives on your own outlook on life, and many more did still feel inspiring.
