While dining out with friends, Sy suggests the difficulty of separating comedy from tragedy. To illustrate his point, he tells his guests two parallel stories about Melinda ; both versions have the same basic elements, but one take on her state of affairs leans toward levity, while the other is full of anguish. Each story involves Melinda coping with a recent divorce through substance abuse while beginning a romantic relationship with a close friend's husband.

I guess I’m just a sucker for films about privileged pseudo-intellectuals exchanging ideas over cigarettes and cocktails. Films with star-studded ensemble casts delivering slick, play-like dialogue. Stories about art, infidelity, and the search for meaning. Nobody does this kind of film better than Woody Allen. His New York sensibilities and glamorous touch make him uniquely suited to tell these stories.

Melinda and Melinda is yet another delightful entry—not just in Allen’s filmography, but in the niche genre I’ve come to love. What sets it apart is the inventive angle it takes in exploring these familiar themes and this atmosphere I find so captivating.

It was an interesting idea for a movie that could have turned out cool, but it was poorly executed.

Drama side: The acting was all very flat and there was seemingly no reason for the affair.

Comedy side: It wasn't that funny. There were maybe 2 or 3 good laughs. Will Ferrell did his best with a poor script.

Radha Mitchell did a fantastic job though. She played both sides very well and was convincing in both.
