I am now a better man and I do somewhat understand the need for films or stories like this. I've had a distaste for films that operate merely for "shock value" or gratuitous perversion simply for the sake of it but I do now see its merits. The director knows that you know that this is disgusting. Takashi Miike doesn't hold your hand through this, he turns film into a voyeuristic experience that takes us through the vilest and most brutal parts of human nature. It is a feat to create something so unethical yet so arresting.
Kakihara is also probably the coolest looking character to ever exist.
