They really missed the mark with this one.
They just completely disregards what the robocop franchise was supposed to represent. They made it into a mindless 2010s action movie. The script was definitely the weakest part.
I especially disliked what they did with robocop himself. I think they should've made the robot arrest machine part of him a bigger plot point in the story, he just gets his consciousness back like 15 minutes after loosing it. And they never explained how. They just said that there was something more than life that made him conscious. It's just lazy writing. I just generally didn't like how his emotions were handled. In terms of the design, it was probably the biggest issue I had with this movie. They literally had the colors right the first few times he's on screen but then for some reason the writers thought it would be cooler if he was all black. It completely ruined the design, it just looked like something from Tron. And at the very end they give him his original colors back and redesigned his armor to have parts of the old armor while making it more modern. THEY HAD THE PERFECT DESIGN AND DECIDED TO SHOW IT OFF FOR LITERALLY 30s. It's just a complete waste. The armor is what made robocop cool in the first place. Also I get that they wanted to show off the actors face but the lack of helmet screen time in this movie is just infuriating. It breaks the immersion that he's a robot every time I saw his face. They should've made him take the visor off rarely like they did in the original trilogy.
The best part by far were the performances though. The actors did what they could with the script and delivered. Especially Gary Oldman, it's no surprise that he did a great job, but still I had to point it out.
Also the set design and overall vfx were pretty well done. It does preserve a little bit of it's cool factor.
In the general viewers eyes it's just a bland action movie, but if you saw the original movie you can see how far they've strayed.
