The Asthenic Syndrome

1989·Drama·2h 33m

In the old days it was called hypochrondria, or black melancholia. Now, apparently, it's termed the Asthenic Syndrome. Whatever it is, Nikolai, a teacher of epicly indifferent pupils, has got it, and it's not much fun.

The Asthenic Syndrome
Where societal collapse doesn’t arrive through war or catastrophe, but through emotional exhaustion — like an entire civilization quietly losing the strength to feel, react, or even remain human anymore.

The Asthenic Syndrome
An example of being completely hooked by a plot in theory but unbelievably bored by its execution. While a layered commentary on grief, mental illness and the Soviet Union is more than assumed to be bleak, this was borderline unwatchable and incredibly frustrating due to its potential. There is a lack of both thematic and visual contrast which outweighs any other experimentalism the film attempts to achieve.
