Loved hearing the stories of the women describing their childhoods. Many were joyful, some more tense, but all seemed secure in their identities, even at a young age.
I liked that they were asked if they ever wanted to be a boy and most said no, but that certain male attributes were interesting to them. Wanting to be the one to carry a girls’ books home from school. I’ve never been one to question my gender as I’m happy with what I’ve got, but I know that feeling of wanting to just be what society wants you to be. This was a cute doc. An interesting mix of narrative, film reels, and documentary.
I think I’d have liked to hear more from the women being interviewed and their experiences without the framing of the other stuff. And in fact, the narrative of the girls in the 60s felt like it was strong enough to stand on its own as well.
