This movie joyfully frolics through at least three different levels of insanity, but boy is it beautiful! The bold colors, always veneering towards the red; the imagery of the manequins, the mask and the hearts; the Gaudíesque setting, it’s all a feast for the eyes, the opening kill is gorgeous! As for the story, El Asesino de Muñecas is clearly a child of Psycho, but without aiming for a twist, we’re given more time to spend with this Norman Bates and his twisted psyche, which is always interesting. There are also a lot of unintentionally funny moments that only fans of older horror films know how to appreciate. I loved every second of it.
