this film doesn’t tell you how to feel. it just pulls you in and leaves you sitting with this eerie, weightless discomfort. it’s slow, quiet, and kind of hypnotic, like watching a dream that’s just slightly off. scarlett johansson is incredible here, somehow robotic and deeply human at the same time. the way she moves through scotland, observing, luring, and slowly changing, is hypnotic.

the way it’s shot, so much of it with hidden cameras, real people, real reactions, it gives it this unsettling realism, like you’re seeing the world through her eyes. and the score is just unreal. mika levi’s music makes everything feel alien, like you’re hearing sounds from another dimension. that screeching, warped violin sound sticks with you. and those abstract, black void sequences are just stunning. it’s one of the most unique takes on the whole “alien among us” concept.

it’s not the easiest watch. it’s cold, detached, and refuses to explain itself. but if you’re in the right mood, it’s an experience that sticks with you.

This is my third viewing after not seeing this for two years in order to prep for The Zone of Interest. Yeah, this is both boring, but absolutely terrifying, engaging, and sad. How could that work? How could something that is so scary, done by something so bad be empathetic, how can you want it to have a good life ven though you know it can't? Why is the first hour of this so terrifying but the last 48 minutes be so depressing that you feel bad for whatever this thing is that has been killing these men? If it tried to help people, whatever controls it won't let whatever it helps live. What could it do? This society is so bad that somebody in it has to be good. There are good people here, they're either just killed or are never seen again. It's so sad, yet so fucking scary. I'm repeating myself just like the movie. The repletition of the film makes the entity somewhat understandable, even if you want to sleep. I would recommend this, just know, you will walk away with so many logical questions about our modern society and the way that men act towards women. A must see, regardless of how you feel.

Under the Skin is an absolutely beautiful movie. It is shot amazingly, it has an impeccable performance from Scarlett Johansson, it has an incredible soundtrack (although I think some tracks may have been slightly overused), and it has some really cool visuals (particularly the voids, the people sinking through the floor, and the alien's true form). I also think being light on dialogue really works in the movies benefit.
