Sara Driver!! I love your mind!

Spent the whole of the duration thinking, “God, this like a surrealist take on Permanent Vacation” and after a quick search Sara Driver produced that film AND is Jim Jarmusch’s wife?! So that tracks.

It uses the industrial, pre-gentrified landscape of New York as a sort of spiritual, surreal minefield that all of our characters we are presented with have to try and navigate on their own terms. None of them know how this potentially mystical force is penetrating, effecting them but it’s just there and they just have to deal with it. It’s so endearing. 

A very easy 75 minute watch with some really good, composed shots and some really good intentional use of imagery. Suzanne Fletcher plays Nicole in limbo so so well.

Feels like wandering through a dream you’re not sure is yours. Nothing’s really explained, people disappear, things go missing, and no one reacts the way they should. And somehow that makes it feel more real. There’s this calmness to it that’s almost eerie. Like something’s off, but no one wants to admit it. The city feels quiet and haunted, the characters feel detached, and the story just sort of drifts, but in a way that pulls you in deeper. Honestly I don’t even know how to describe this. It’s like… being half awake and watching the world slip through your fingers. And for some reason, that really stuck with me.

Deeply fascinating in its execution of mood and magical realism/surrealism. I was taken by surprise how much I enjoyed this film, but Sara Driver's direction is incredibly well-composed and intrigues me for the rest of her filmography.
