This was such a good movie, people dont talk about it enough 👏👏.
I love the dichotomy between the empathy one can feel for deeply closeted, ultra-masculine men who hurt the LGBTQ+ community in order to preserve the perception that they’re “straight,” and the reality that they often inflict so much violence and harm on queer people that, at a certain point, they’re no better than any other homophobe.
It raises the question of whether that empathy is justified, or whether they’ve gone too far to deserve a great love story or acceptance from other LGBTQ+ people.
I believe everyone deserves the possibility of redemption and happiness, but no one else can do that work for them. The shame they carry is often so overwhelming that the hope of living an open, happy life feels impossible, making them unwilling to take even the first step toward accountability.
