Boy I had to think long and hard for this review. In the midpoint of this movie I was almost thinking of maybe a two star rating, but at the end and a little bit after the credits started rolling I was definitely rethinking it.
This movie is not what you most likely think it will be. For some reason it’s listed as a horror movie in several sites like IMDB and even Letterboxd. That couldn’t be any more wrong. Definitely more of a drama thriller. That misleading bit of info was originally what was making my rating be down a bit but then I thought it’s not the fault of the filmmakers possibly, just like that Nic Cage film a few years ago Pig.
I definitely won’t spoil what is going on in here, but once I decided to go along with it, it did become an intriguing mystery. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite as satisfying which is why I’m not rating it higher but it does leave you thinking. I mean I guess at the end we were supposed to know as much as our main character knew, especially when you hear about the real story, so it makes sense.
Of course I have to talk about the star power of this movie. Robin Williams was always a great comedic actor but man his dramatic stuff never went unnoticed for sure. And Toni Collette, why doesn’t she have an academy award by now? I dare say underrated performances from the both of them, and everyone else was no slouch either.
So overall I’m really glad I decided to think this one out. It is a good movie that slips through a lot of people’s radars which brings up some interesting themes. I almost want to say there is a definite answer but there’s still so much that we might not understand, and with the real case who knows if we ever will?
This for sure left an impression on me, so yeah it’s a high recommendation
