okay. i see how berger's taekwondo would lead up to this. similarly, it takes place over a getaway with a group of lads but this definitely had more overt displays of homoeroticism as well as machismo to the point of very grimace-inducing portrayal of cisheterosexism.
more women are seen at play in horseplay versus taekwondo and i found them sadly underutilized as it did touch upon how the culture of masculinity does affect women. much could be said about a certain plot thread that was left hanging...
nonetheless, berger still plays to his strengths in how he composes his scenes. natural light is a big boost to scenes, that at times, do not really add anything. im quite unsure if berger's portrayal of male social dynamics is a strength as i do think it is accurate to some degree but it does get uncomfortably fetishistic. i think taekwondo was able to better balance this out since it had more tenderness and heart to it.
the ending kind of left me speechless albeit, in a shock-factor way not impressed way, since there is no resolution after the final action takes place. im not sure just how nico would live after realizing what he had done.
i'd say i enjoyed taekwondo more but i am interested in how berger follows this up in the coming years since it does feel like he isn't done yet with his homoerotic all-male escapades and the hi-jinks and angst that comes with it.
