“Too bad YOU! Will die!”
Josh Brolin said it best in last year’s Weapons: What the fuck?!!
Look, the first movie is far from a masterpiece. Not the greatest scriptwriting, CG that has aged like milk left out of the fridge for a week. But it’s still entertaining to the fans of the games! I believe it made some money, since they made a sequel released theatrically. But what happened to that money? Did they lose most of it gambling? This somehow manages to look much cheaper! The first is a multimillion dollar budget with Christopher Nolan at the helm in comparison!
The CG is aging like milk left out for a month now! Looking Asylum levels! And while some cast members return, lots of recasting, and miscasting as well! Christopher Lambert might not have been perfect casting for Raiden but he made the most of it and made it memorable. I like James Remar but no… he is not a suitable replacement. I hope he paid off whatever debt he really needed to take care of with this paycheck.
And Brian Thompson is an intimidating looking man, he can play a good villain. But wow, he is trying way too hard in here! I do love when actors turn it up to 11 playing villain roles and chewing up the scenery (Raul Julia an excellent example in Street Fighter) but this was not it.
And the story, man. I remember Matt Stone and Trey Parker doing a seminar on scriptwriting, and their main point was to avoid “And then this happened” but instead “this happened because this happened.” Major “and then” writing in here. And then Jax has his metal robot arms. And then Sub Zero has a brother who just happens to dress like him, have the same powers, and same name. Yeah I buy that… And that scene really was just an excuse to have a Scorpion and Sub Zero fight, funny how they don’t show up for the rest of the movie.
Still, while it may be the worst in the entire live action franchise, not the worst movie ever. I can at least laugh at how bad it is. And man the soundtrack is pretty damn sweet. I could be having the worst day ever, and the MK theme would cheer me up!
