Theme: Be true to yourself, not what everyone else expects you to be.
Writing: This movie really surprised me, I laughed so much. I don’t know the last time I’ve seen a spoof/parody movie. This aged super well for pre-Marvel era. It just made fun of superheroes and their arcs so well and didn’t take itself seriously at all which I’m glad they embraced. So many silly things like thinking the bad guys aren’t bad guys because they don’t have a theme with their costumes. The assembling, the training, the non-lethal weapons, all great. To anyone who does watch this, know that the effects are pretty rough BUT this was made in 1999 on who knows how small of a budget. It was so realistic having a popular superhero be ruled by corporate sponsorships and trying to make something out of that which caused trouble. Was the plot a little predictable? Yes, but the jokes— not at all. I never knew what to expect from people.
Acting: So much versatility in roles like the Blue Raja, and Ben Stiller’s indecisiveness between furious and meh. Or the Sphinx just giving mentor energy while also not actually being that smart.
Cinematography: I was surprised by the amount of unique angles in this, it was actually so fun and explored comedy in a way I feel like isn’t explored very often. Even the fish eye lens up close was fantastic. Or just the visual comedy of running back and forth on the lawn and head shopping up on camera one at a time.
Production Design: Well thought out and the perfect amount of cheap and tacky for wannabe superheroes. And some of the villains I was howling at like Disco Boys who just wanted to keep disco alive 😭
