the best lighting i’ve seen a movie this year. fallen leaves a beautiful but simple story that manages to feel like a fairytale with some very dry humor. aki’s visual style has been very influential here in nothern europe, down to editorials and commercials even so this was beautiful to look at. we have some great commentary about working class life but it’s also the most accurate portrayal of life as a student with accommodation that’s forced to have job on top of their studies. the awkward ‘love life’, the drinking, the constant job switch, it’s all there. they just hired 40 year old actors.
