It’s incredibly difficult not to compare this sequel documentary with its former and in fact as the third act begins to uncover by Emily’s efforts, it’s actually very necessary that the two programs reach a more equitable standard of funding, production, and roll-out just as many of the girls here expressed throughout. The topics engaged with here do feel more realized and weighted given the backdrop of the Roe v Wade overturn. For the time that the doc allows actual debate/discussion with a mock court and electoral procedures, it’s really well done. There should’ve been more of that added in.
Each of the girl’s background is given more presence here than how the Boys doc was ran which I think did give more sincere and fleshed out stakes to the goals they set for themselves at the camp. Seeing the relationships develop between them all was really sweet too. Many of their talking head interviews gave better takeaways than what was presented during the organized program activities. The selected group of girls for the doc are definitely approaching politics form a more intellectual and all encompassing perspective than what some of the boys in Texas’ Boys State exhibited as an almost gamified point of view on it all. Almost as much as the first one, there is still a ton of heart and connection built here that if nothing else gives all of them a (perhaps more) hopeful outlook on the future than what they had going into the camp.
“I’m voting for Emily. I don’t necessarily think she’s going to win… and I don’t agree with the policies she would create, but I think she is a good human being.”
