After watching the first, and what I assume to be, the best Jack Ryan film,
The Hunt For Red October, I thought I'd continue watching them to see what they had in store. This time we've got Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan, which automatically gives this interpretation a layer of gravitas but also emotional depth which was less pronounced in the previous interpretation.
Within the first half an hour, it was clear this film was of a lower calibre than the previous. While I liked Harrison Ford in the role, the action sequences, and the emotional stakes of the family, it lacked the depth, complexity and competence of the first. This film felt very generic and hollow in comparison. The Hunt For Red October was larger in scale, had more political depth and complexity, had a more compelling plot and stronger charecters. This film in comparison was rather lackluster with a one dimensional IRA plot with the typical revenge storyline and comparatively pathetic characters in terms of depth which makes it harder to care and therefore stay engaged.
Overall, it's nothing special. Almost verged on being boring on more than one occasion. While it would be an alright popcorn movie, I wanted something with a little more substance. Obviously very different films in some regards but in terms of the revenge aspects, I'd argue
Quantum Of Solace is 10 times better.
I'll probably watch the
final Ford Jack Ryan film but I can't pretend it fills me with great excitement and anticipation. We'll see, maybe it'll surprise me.
