Afternoon. St Pancras. London.
Streamed through MUBI.
First Watch.
I love a pseudo-sexual-thriller more than the next guy, and
Piercing really does tick those boxes to some degree on that type of film. Christopher Abbot and Mia Wasikowska have so much weird, intense, awkward but sexy chemistry it almost doesn’t matter that some of the surrealism is half-baked and contrived.
I really like the contained style it imposes from the start and the inner psyche of Reed being projected through hallucinations/dream sequences of what he wants to (or really,
needs to) hear is really thought provoking. Made me think of Alice Lowe’s
Prevenge almost, that sort of primal humanistic urge.
Piercing is sorta provocative, it’s sorta sexy, it’s sorta
Lynchian, it’s sorta
Cronenberg(
ian?) and it’s sorta good. Nothing more, nothing less.
