The plot is really dumb, but what is interesting is the execution: it's a fun watch with a comic book style and a great score. It's also a western/horror that has a fun take on the genre and on the really interesting role of the Church; I enjoyed the secularity of the film, even though it deals with Catholic themes.

Before starting this I thought this could be the first low rating I give a carpenter film but he simply doesn’t miss, there’s stuff in here that doesn’t fully work or isn’t explored enough but he knows how to craft a great story and execute it in his style. Some of the action sequences aren’t great but the captivating story makes up for that. Carpenter is putting himself up there for me as my favourite composer as I haven’t heard a score from him that wasn’t brilliant.

Vampires has a fun premise, but it embodies many flaws. First off, it doesn't have any unique twists and turns; it takes every turn you'd expect and pulls no surprises. It also overstays its welcome. This shouldn't be a nearly 2-hour movie; it should be a fun vampire action horror that's in and out. Vampires also has an uneven tone. Is it a serious horror film? a tongue-in-cheek actioner? a gritty western? Who knows, because the movie can't decide. The cast had no chemistry + I don't think any character was remotely interesting. I originally gave this 2/5, but I'm feeling evil today, so I'll change it to a 0.5/5 lol. Overall, Vampires is a lazily-plotted, tonally inconsistent film that overstays its welcome, and I can't recommend it to basically anyone since it's so bad.
