good cinematography but that’s all it has. normally i wouldn’t take time to write a serious review but with seeing this at the Twelve Lions Film Festival for one of my classes I figured I’d write a little something. normally in films that cover more serious topics I find that dry humor works well in creating more comfort to the audience but in the case of Eric Larue i found its use of humor, very insensitive and overly comedic which caused a disregard to the seriousness of school shootings. the dialogue felt very forced along with the emotions displayed by the various characters and it just dragged on and on. there’s not a single likable character but there’s also nothing special about them either.

I don’t know if this would work as well for people who aren’t well-versed in Christian platitudes but I was dialled in. 

The way they nailed all the typical characters you’ll find in a congregation!!!!

The bumbling minister whose self-awareness never kicks in to alert him that he’s not helping anyone, he’s just trying to validate his own search for purpose. 

The hot married woman who entertains herself by tiptoeing the line of appropriateness. 

The man who everyone coddles.

The woman who everyone blames.

The cool pastor who towers over you and promises everything will be just fine as long as you follow him.

The churches who become possessive of someone’s tragedy so they can claim to be THE ONES who found the solution.

The woman who speaks in tongues and is more spiritually enlightened than everyone else.

And that last conversation. Left me feeling even more confused but maybe that’s the point?

My first ever movie premier with this film and I’m extremely blessed. Got to experience an after party and was lucky enough to be on the presence of Michael Shannon himself as well as beloved director Jeff Nichols. I had a great conversation with Jeff and even got a picture with the two of them. Lovely guys but this film wasn’t my favorite. Promising at some points but fell short in other points. Didn’t feel satisfied with the overall product. This isn’t to discredit Michael because I think he has some extreme talent behind the camera but this movie dragged a little too much for me.
