Imagine writing a documentary about a pivotal moment in your life, a career altering moment that shattered your view of yourself and who you were to be. Andrew McCarthy does this so well with this documentary BRATS.
BRATS is about the rising stars of Hollywood in the 80’s and how the title “The Brat Pack” affected them, especially McCarthy. He battles and comes forth with his feelings of fear, uncertainty, and nostalgia in a positive and negative perspective, as well as seeking out his fellow cast and crew members that he had worked with.
It’s interesting to see how one phrase and define a group of separate people and summarize them as people who don’t love their craft. Some of the actors let it weigh them down. It his some of them hard, especially actor of The Outsiders, The Breakfast Club, Mighty Ducks, and St. Elmo’s Fire, Emilio Estevez. His view on the name was completely different from actor Rob Lowe and Jon Cryer, one of which denies being included in the group and one who used the name to achieve greatness.
One thing that everyone seemed to have in common that was beautiful that, when asked if they’d go back and redo or change things, they all said no. They all said everything was worth it, that its put them where they are now and its shaped our modern day culture now. The 80’s was the age of physical media. CDs, vinyl, tapes…all those things were cool, trendy and that idea was encouraged by movies like Pretty In Pink where several scenes were shot in a record shop.
All in all this documentary was an experience of sharing and understanding culture and what shapes it, both the good and the bad, and most of all, perspective.
