most normal philosophy major almatycel right here!
haven’t read crime n punishment but from what i gather its a very mid adaptation. some i guess valid things to say about early capitalism kazakhstan and all the cultural shit surrounding power and corruption (and even that was kinda on the nose and a failed attempt at insight when the issue was addressed directly) make it a decent standalone.
but the whole point of crime and punishment (and what i expected to be the point of this movie)
was a psychological analysis of the criminal where the cultural critique was secondary. the guy barely speaks here and is basically a blank slate in terms of any character evaluation. which could be good for some purposes i guess? like, you could go really in depth to fill that absence. but this is kinda undermined by the fact that the little analysis material in the form of philosophical references the viewers are given is sooo freakin surface level im surprised this wasn’t directed by an underage edgelord (natural selection, really?)
