"We’ll never be able to change the world, so we’ll be just fine."
An avant-garde, experimental, surrealist, even trippy anime that full with non-literal meanings narratives(metaphors), created by Shingo Natsume(Director and Original Writer) and featuring the legendary curated music of Shinichiro Watanabe(Cowboy Bebop).
An exploration of coming of age, personality and the conflicts that faced by teenagers as they transition into adulthood. This secondary school student is adrift, both in body and soul. Portrayed by a passive protagonist, Nagara and supported by characters that satisfy the imagination, not to mention the floating world or ‘kono sekai’ it is deeply rooted in the genre of experimental surrealist fantasy.
The depiction of an unlimited world lends a dense, surreal atmosphere to this story. Not only that, but the students are both blessed and cursed by powers that could be described as a ‘double-edged sword’. These powers might seem cool at first, though they will ultimately serve merely as a mask for their true selves.
Sonny Boy, a truly refreshing anime for me amidst a weekend filled with rather run-of-the-mill viewing. Shingo Natsume (director) and Hisashi Eguchi (visual designer) have succeeded in turning this anime into a masterpiece. A story that at first glance seems boring turns out to linger in my mind for the next week. And the fluid visuals, free from distracting lines, the clarity of the backgrounds and the surreal visualisation, were enough to captivate me and hold my attention. Not forget to mention Shinichro Watanabe's work for the music soundtracks, that ending's song had not leaving my head. 10/10 for Sonny Boy.
All the memorable episodes that I think should be mentioned in this review: Episode 8 (Yamabiko’s story), Episode 11 (Coming to terms with grief), and Episode 12 (The bittersweet ending). I hope Nagara doesn’t forget the promise he made to Nozomi, that if they ever met again, they would be friends once more.
Sonny Boy affect my personality as being someone who not and didn't trying to be someone else. With Asakaze's whom should not belongs in (over)powered, his powers becaming himself a mask that no one else even want to be honest and modest around. Theres so much that i can apply on in this Anime, it still fresh everytime i seen it.
