The first half of season 1 is magic. I was fully hooked into the storylines of our deuteragonists, and coupled with the musical numbers and early exposition, it was so exciting diving into each episode. Simon’s disillusionment and Fiona’s want for a better life were beautifully intertwined throughout the chaos that brought them together. While the second half of season 1 didn’t hit those same high notes, it was still a fun time and a satisfying conclusion.
Starting season 2, my expectations were high to hit these same high points, and it just never quite landed in the same way. I still enjoyed this season, but I think that’s primarily due to how much I love the characters and the world, and less so because I was engrossed in the story.
After thinking about it, I think it’s primarily because of the lack of Simon. Without him to root you into the conflict, I just wasn’t as emotionally invested. They tried to make Huntress the second protagonist alongside Fiona, and I did enjoy her backstory and her development throughout, but she’s no Simon. He was a character that we have known since DAY 1, and to watch his arc following the loss of powers play out felt like a natural progression given the world he inhabits. But Huntress just did not meet those same heights as Simon did.
This is all to say I could watch 10 more seasons of this show, so at the end of the day, keep em coming.
