there's no need to be contrarian — this show is a medium-defining marvel
i'm so story-pilled when it comes to visual media that i've sometimes been tempted to write this show's success off with "it had incredible source material"
but to say that would be a massive mistake
yes, asoiaf belongs in the all-time literature hall of fame, but i've watched so many of my favorite works slandered by god awful adaptations that i remain convinced it's a skill-based art form
the three body problem? 😬
the expanse? 😬
ender's game? 😬
the maze runner? 😬
percy jackson? 😬
watchmen? 😬
you wouldn't know it from the adaptations, but these originals slap HARD
the creators of game of thrones took a pretty big risk by sparing no expense in their process, but the vfx, the score, the actors, the cinematography, the pacing (think of everything they decided to CUT from the massive books — they make such great decisions that you don't notice that 90% of the source material is missing), and the fact that they respected the storyline as written and did not bow to the norms of the time... you just have to give them their flowers
incest in episode 1, killing beloved characters, spending a fuckload of money on dragon vfx, are you kidding me? you basically get slapped in the face for all of season 1, until you fully suspend your disbelief as to what type of story this is
and that suspension of disbelief is required for the show's big moments to land. this isn't a hero's journey. it's a bloodbath, and anyone could end up on the iron throne. as a viewer, you buy in pretty quick
it's on par with the legendary status of lord of the rings — they stepped up to a gargantuan task and damn near hit a home run. as a fan of the books, i am so so so so glad that this exists
as much as i disliked the ending, GRRM is really to blame for that. i respect being old and rich and not giving a fuck, but cmon, man — don't you want to finish what you started?
