Unfortunately I did not like this as much as I thought. Two main issues — I think I just don’t enjoy Emma very much as a character. It’s portrayed that her overall thoughtlessness comes from a general naivety and ignorance (which may be true in part) BUT some actions do feel intentionally mean-spirited and what growth she does exhibit is extremely delayed. Secondly, the romance between Emma and Mr Knightly I was seriously not feeling for the majority of this. There is very little spark between them which I understand is kinda the point but a few little CRUMBS throughout would’ve been nice. Also, Emma’s big realization that she loves Knightly almost comes across as entitlement rather than love. I really do like Mr Knightly as a character and his speech is lovely but as far as him and Emma… I’m afraid I was left a bit wanting (at least from this adaptation.)
I did like that this longer format showcased Emma and her father’s relationship, set up the connection between Emma, Jane, and Frank, gave more space for all the side characters’ storylines, and we got to see everyone’s happy endings.
No disrespect to my queen Jane Austen, Miss Emma is just not one of my favorites.
