Miyazaki's first major work. This series has proved hugely inspirational to animators around the world, including the director of Flow who said he took the concept of his flooded universe from this show.
I love Miyazaki, and there are a lot of good things in this show. The characters are fleshed out and likable, the colors are lovely, and Miyazaki's penchant for having opposing forces who all have their own viable reasons for doing what they are doing, rather than just being evil monsters. That's all wonderful, and as a Miyazaki completionist I'm glad I got around to watching this series.
But I wasn't really drawn to this show as much as Miyazaki's other works, or as much as modern TV shows. The pacing felt much too slow for me, to the point where I wasn't really hooked. Oftentimes I'll binge shows and they'll hook me into staying invested. But for Future Boy Conan my mind kept wandering. I wound up watching Rick and Morty again and it felt much more gripping.
Still, there's enough positive here for a fan of Miyazaki to enjoy the experience.
