I am utterly unqualified to review this.
It would take a true film historian to properly review this.
This is a work I cannot wait to rewatch in 10 years after I have dive deep into the cinema and its movements throughout the 20th and 19th century I only understand a fraction of this reference references but even still I am in awe of what this film is.
In a sentence Histoire(s) du cinéma is a philosophical and spiritual look at how the camera has been used throughout history, and the statements it makes about humanity as a whole.
I could not even begin to unpack the stylistic delivery of this film. A rapid hypnotic Kaleidoscope of juxtaposing images sounds and ideas. Made over a 10 year span Histoire(s) du cinéma makes an attempt to unpack and understand what cinema is at its very core. But even the film itself cannot come up with an answer that can be put into a film, let alone words. While it can’t give us a concrete answer, it doesn’t need to because like the film nothing is concrete. It’s a constant ever flowing source of contradictions, juxtapositions and absurdities.
Histoire(s) du cinéma is truly a one of a kind art piece and one who is ideas will stick with me for as long as I walk the Earth.
