I’ve finally gotten around to watching this and i have a few thoughts. It’s undeniably important that this documentary exists. The topic is necessary, long overdue, and deserves serious attention. That said, I found the execution deeply uncomfortable and at times very exploitative. The documentary repeatedly replays sexualized clips of these children, most notably Ariana Grande and Jamie Lynn Spears, when simply describing those moments would have conveyed the point without reproducing the harm. Even when shown “for context” letting this footage recirculate feels troubling, especially when it’s unclear whether consent was given for these clips to be reused by the people shown.
There’s an important distinction between former child actors telling their own stories and other people with no personal connection to them speaking about their experiences for them. A documentary that critiques exploitation should not replicate it in the process. These stories deserve to be told, just not through the same imagery that harmed the children in the first place.
