Two perfectly contrasting, and totally different documentaries about the same man. Where he was, and where he is.
If you’re an avid Steve fan, you probably have read his autobiography and have some sort of image of him as a younger man, the first part of the doc serves as a sorted extended passage of that era of his life.
The second plays as a sort of cathartic, hubris filled retrospect where the mask of the comedian is beautifully unveiled and left standing in front of us is not just a comedic monolith, but a caring husband, a kind father and a man who may not have regrets, but the understanding of his privilege and his position, from good and bad aspects.
Theres a running theme about his relationship with his father in particular, and the story about the letter he received from a mother who read the story in The New Yorker, passed it on to her husband who read it and implored for their sons phone number is heartbreaking. So is the letter he received from his actual father imploring him to have a child to rectify his own parental mistakes is so fucking sad.
Must watch for a fan, but a definite watch if you’re not. You’ll appreciate him, you’ll fall in love with him.
