I kept thinking this was gonna get better, then the show ended.
I think that this could have made a great movie, but the pacing in this series is not fitting for the format. You can tell the directors here had much more ambition than they were allowed, and I think with that ambition realized, this could have been much better. But in its current form, the pacing drags, the characters aren’t fleshed out enough, and there’s a lot of loose ends that were never picked back up.
As much as I tried to sympathize with Vince, his constant selfish, and stupid decisions made it hard to care much about him when he continued to tear down everything. I am a die - hard Jason Bateman fan, don’t get me wrong, but I honestly don’t think this role fit him very well. Not to say he was bad by any means, but his softer tone just conflicted too much with what the show was trying to show you. I found myself seeing “Jason Bateman” more than I saw “Vince.”
A big thing for me when I watch something is being able to connect with themes and meaning, and while this show attempts to dip into concepts of obsession, greed, and family, I found it shallow and lacking any genuine rhyme or reason. The characters here have a very sad backstory, but the way it’s executed comes off as an afterthought rather than a pivotal concept in the show.
However, I thought the atmosphere was fantastic. New York is great backdrop for a show like this, and the colors and editing just compliment it further, some of those scenes were very well framed and composed.
All this being said, you can tell there’s something great buried here, but what that was may never see the light of day.
