no dwelling on bad subplots just female friendship across ages and backgrounds and they get up to some silly business 😜😜😜
maaaybe controversial but to me this was new and improved version of when the camellia blooms. they definitely have the same general storyline, but i enjoyed how this show—similar to a show like business proposal does so well—is that it recognizes it’s not meant to be serious. it’s self-aware that it doesn’t need to have a drawn out murder mystery to reinforce character relationships. it’s inspiring enough without feeling like it needs to punch you in the gut with a random death or forced childhood trauma. all tropes are troping in the correct amount, which makes the best kind of k-drama in my eyes.
my one gripe leading up to the end was that i didn’t feel like it was saying anything as meaningful as it could be, as a show about women in a conservative environment promoting sexuality. but the finale summed it up perfectly for me: seeing seo taiji and the boys again on tv and her heels picking up speed, then protestors showing up as they do, again and again. some things always will be ahead of their time, or dismissed (at first). progress is never linear. not a novel message, but one that just feels good to be reminded of even/especially in 2024.
it checked every box for me and brought me out of my year-long k-drama slump. a must watch if you love seeing women win!
p.s. lee se-hee was the standout for me! i found myself watching her even in the background of scenes <3 also shoutout to ra mi-ran who totally belongs on an epic, cool project like this (fist pumped the air when she first showed up and knew this was going to be good); and yeon woo-jin… i’m watching everything you’re in, including rewatching daily dose of sunshine 😩
