In the Year F.C. (Future Century) 60, much of mankind inhabits space colonies which orbit the Earth. Dominance over the colonies is decided once every four years by a large tournament in which each nation sends a single representative to fight the others with a giant robot called a Gundam. Domon Kashuu is selected to represent Neo-Japan in one of these tournaments, but he fights less to ensure his nation's victory than to find his brother, who has been blamed for the deaths of Domon's parents and the disappearance of a very dangerous weapon, the Devil Gundam (Dark Gundam).

SATTE MINNASAN. I, THE NARRATOR, WILL NOW WALK YOU THROUGH EXACTLY HOW THIS EPISODE WILL PLAY OUT. HOW WILL DOMON AND CO GET OUT OF THIS ONE?
GUNDAM FIGHTO. READY? GO!
EPISODE TITLE: REST IN PEACE, (CHARACTER!) THEY DIE THIS EPISODE! AND DOMON UNLEASHES HIS NEW SPECIAL MOVE!
This series is the epitome of badassery. Domon Kasshu is literally the coolest guy ever. I love how he’s just the absolute ultimate badass macho Chad but also wears his heart on his sleeve and isn’t afraid to cry or show that he’s hurting inside. There’s so much to love about this show, from the parody level stereotyping of different nations in both Gundams and their pilots, to the absolutely maxed out hot blooded 90’s shonen camp complete with insane long winded special attack names, accented by a clear love and appreciation for classic kung fu movies. The finale is one of the most embarrassingly sincere works of art I have ever witnessed and that’s just the beauty of G Gundam, man. I’m not super familiar with the Super Robot subgenre but I can’t imagine that Gurren Lagann didn’t take some influence from this.
So why only 3.5 stars? I can rock with cheesy, one note villains with pretty flimsy motivations. As well as the entire series being a giant tournament arc of which its rules are complete bullshit and you can’t really tell what the stakes of any given battle until the finals are. Those are totally forgivable in the context of what this series is. But 50 episodes was just unnecessary and kinda fucks the pacing of the main overarching narrative by filling it with fluff battle of the week episodes. I get it though, this is very much episodic Saturday morning cartoon vibes and tv anime from this era had mandates from studio execs to drag series’ out in order to air for a full year. But honestly the incredible balls to the wall final stretch of episodes made the grind worth it.

ANIMATION: Kinda stiff for the most part but fantastic art direction makes up for it
