“I am a student of life”
Life is study! Coincidentally, while watching this, I would occasionally glance at reading for various classes, so Kintaro's base desire beyond insane levels of horniness to just educate himself about everything and anything he can was both adorable and relatable. God, what an absolutely incredible experience it was watching this lmao. This is instantly both one of the most unique animes I've seen, and without any doubt in mind one of the funniest shows I've ever had the fortune of watching. Do your best to trust me when I say that watching this was probably most similar to my first time going through the Jackass show and films. Golden Boy is absurdly stupid and juvenile, a very specific taste of brain rot humor and rampant crassness, but boy howdy, is it all just so funny if you're on its wavelength. It's worth noting that this was a viewing of the English dub, which had been specifically recommended to me as the version to watch. Experienced all in one sitting and along the way smiling until my face hurt and sometimes laughing until my stomach felt like I just did a set of curls, Doug Smith as Kintaro Oe is immediately one of my favorite vocal performances in a work of animation. I'm not going to call it a "great" performance, because the real magic of Golden Boy as a show to watch and Kintaro as a character and voice to go on a journey with is that, when you're lacking in actual expertise, you can just give everything you encounter 1000% energy, and with a sincere attitude for learning and non-stop moving, you'll reach the finish line with flying colors. Man, I lost track of how many line readings from Smith just killed me, and the animators did such an amazing job of making Kintaro so expressive throughout his misadventures. He goes through a large handful of styles from classic 90's anime aesthetics, and just when you think you've seen all the funny faces this guy can have, you're soon surprised and laughing all over again. I think the last thing that pushes Golden Boy into the realm of greatness for me is how Kintaro is also characterized as not just a weirdo horndog but also very smart and even compassionate when it comes down to certain moments. It turns out you can write a character who's definitely perverted but also not an awful person. If you want pure cheese and beautiful anime women in a tight and well-animated package that you could watch all in one go like I did, this is the goods. It's "the goods" in a way where I can only call a select few other animated shows more straight-up entertaining. If you have a friend group who likes bizarre culture oddities or just need something to laugh at over drinks and food, then Golden Boy is now outright essential.
